Vintage American Made Gibson Electric guitar featuring 3 single coil pickups and different switching combinations.
First designed in 1974, the S-1 made it's official debut in 1975.
With 3 single coil pickups designed by pickup guru Bill Lawrence, this was Gibson's attempt to get into the single coil world/compete with the fender Stratocaster and Telecaster.
Early artists that endorsed/used the S-1 were Carlos Santana and Ron Wood/Kieth Richards from the Rolling Stones.
The S-1 features a 2 way toggle switch to select either the bridge pickup on its own or the 4 position Rotary switch.
The Rotary switch gives you:
1) Bridge and Middle pickup
2) Middle and Neck pickup
3) All three pickups on together
4) Bridge and Neck pickups out of phase
The body is a single cutaway, Les Paul shaped Mahogany with a bolt on Maple neck with rosewood finger board and Flying V headstock Shape.
Finished in Ebony.
Along with the "see through" Bill Lawrence single coil pickups, the guitar also features a Schaller "harmonica" bridge and stop tail piece.
As with a lot of electric guitars from the 70's, the original tuners have been replaced with Grover tuners. The original tuners are included.
The S-1, along with the Marauder, didn't really sell that well at the time and, of course, now they're collectable. But they are useful! Very unique and versatile.
Comes with a Non Original, period correct case.
They were discontinued in 1980 and only (approx) 3089 S-1 guitars were made(!)
This Used guitar is in excellent condition with some play wear, but overall very little - especially for it's age of 39 years old.
All electronics work as they should and plays well.
This is a versatile tone machine. And... it's a Vintage Gibson made in the USA
